The Fair Employment and Treatment (Northern Ireland) Order 1998 (FETO) makes it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of religious belief and/or political opinion in employment and vocational training.A person may also be subject to discrimination on the grounds that they do not hold any religious belief or political opinion.A political opinion is not solely limited to the politics of Northern Ireland but includes other political opinions for example trade unionism and or different denominations within religion for example the Brethren or a political opinion such as feminism.
The Fair Employment and Treatment (Northern Ireland) Order 1998 places a number of obligations on employers including registration with the Equality Commission and the requirement to monitor staff on an annual basis. It would be particularly important that employers have Equal Opportunity Policies within the workplace as it provides the employee with information on their rights and obligations under the legislation.
